Designed in 1878 by William Lee and F.J. Smith, Caxton Hall originally opened as Westminster Town Hall in 1883. The hall was used as a regular meeting site for members of the Women’s Suffragette movement in the early 1900s, and by the Ministry of Information as a secure venue for Sir Winston Churchill to hold press conferences during the Second World War. Caxton Hall served as the register office for central London until 1979, and it was a popular location for celebrity marriages including those of Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Sellers, Orson Welles, Roger Moore, Joan Collins, and George Harrison. Caxton Hall was redeveloped into a collection of modern flats in 2006.
