Berthed at St. Mary Overie Dock in the historic Southwark area of London, The Golden Hinde is a full-sized reconstruction of the Tudor warship in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe in 1577-1580. Drake captured many Spanish ships and their treasures during his three-year voyage around the world, and upon his return to England, Queen Elizabeth I visited the Golden Hinde with great ceremony. The Golden Hinde replica, a fully working ship, was launched in Devon in 1973. It has sailed over 140,000 miles, and has also circumnavigated the globe. Visitors can climb on board for a self-guided tour or book a ‘Family Overnight Living History Tours’ where guests become part of Sir Francis Drake’s crew, dress in Tudor costumes, and sleep on the gun-deck amongst the cannons for the night (security guard included).
