Commonly known as ‘The Troop’, The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery is Her Majesty The Queen’s ceremonial Saluting Battery. The Troop’s soldiers are superb equestrians, and they are trained to drive a team of six horses that pull the ‘thirteen pounder’ state saluting gun. The King’s Troop are also trained as fighting soldiers, and they have six men or women deployed on operations at any one time. The Troop’s ceremonial duties include the firing of Royal Salutes in Hyde Park on Royal Anniversaries and State Occasions, and providing a gun carriage and team of black horses for State and Military funerals. The Troop also takes part in Remembrance Sunday, the Lord Mayor’s Show and the Queen’s Birthday Parade. One month of the year, members of The Troop can be found performing the duties of the Queen’s Life Guard at Horse Guards near Buckingham Palace.
