Completed in 2002, the Golden Jubilee Footbridges were named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s fifty years on the throne. The two ‘cable stayed’ footbridges run along either side of the existing Hungerford Railway Bridge and connect pedestrians across the River Thames from London’s South Bank to Charing Cross Station. The first Hungerford Railway Bridge opened in 1845 and was named for the Hungerford Market that operated near Charing Cross on the Strand from around 1680 to 1862.
