Remembering Princess Diana

The memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 6th July 2004. The Diana Memorial Fountain is designed to reflect Diana’s life as water flows from its highest point in two directions, and then cascades, swirls, and bubbles before meeting in a calm pool at the bottom. The Memorial also has three bridges where visitors can cross the water and go right to the ‘heart’ of the fountain, symbolizing Diana’s quality of openness. Designed by American landscape artist, Kathryn Gufstafson, the fountain contains 545 pieces of Cornish granite and is located in the southwest corner of Hyde Park. The 2004 unveiling event brought Diana’s two families – the Windsors and the Spencers – together publicly for the first time since the princess’s funeral in 1997. Upon the unveiling, the Queen paid tribute to the ‘extraordinary effect Diana had on those around her’ and her ability ‘not only to touch people’s lives but to change them’.
