Located in the undercroft of the Queen Elizabeth Hall along the River Thames, the Southbank Skate Park has been a popular spot for the skateboard community since the early 1970s. The area is covered with constantly changing graffiti, and is often busy with skateboarders and BMXers performing their latest daring tricks. Although the site has no official sponsor, the area has become a distinctive feature and popular social scene of the Southbank Centre. The Skate Park was threatened with closure in 2008 to make room for retail development, but it was saved with positive encouragement from the Prime Minister’s office.
