Now home to many of the world’s finest luxury brands including Tiffany and Co., Gucci, and Hermés, London’s Royal Exchange has been a center for commerce since Queen Elizabeth I granted the Exchange its ‘Royal’ title in 1571. Founded by merchant Sir Thomas Gresham, the original building consisted of offices and shops designed around an open courtyard where merchants and tradesmen could gather to conduct business. The Royal Exchange was rebuilt twice on its original site after being destroyed by the Great Fire in 1666 and again following another fire in 1838. The current building was designed by architect Sir William Tite, and his design closely resembles the building’s original layout. Visitors should take time to look up and view the 24 giant murals that were installed in 1892 around the upper floor of the central courtyard. The impressive murals were painted by leading artists of the day and illustrate the history of the Royal Exchange and the City of London.
