Originally the home of the Whitehall Theatre, Trafalgar Studios was opened by the Ambassador Theatre Group on 26 May 2004. The original Whitehall Theatre opened on September 29, 1930, and mostly built its reputation on modern comedies until World War II. In 1942, the theatre produced The Whitehall Follies featuring Phyllis Dixey, the first stripper to perform in the West End. The show opened with great fanfare and Dixey continued performances at the theatre for the next five years. The Follies were followed by a series of farces that came to be known as The Whitehall Farces. Produced by Lord Brian Rix, the Farces were staged over the next twenty-two years, and many of them were televised. Trafalgar Studios’ two intimate theatres were designed by architects Tim Foster and John Muir. Trafalgar Studio 1 opened with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Othello.
