From Royalty to Hollywood, The Ritz London has played host to many prominent guests including King Edward VIII, Russian Prima Ballerina Anna Pavlova, the Aga Khan, and Paul Getty. In 1921, Charlie Chaplin needed 40 policemen to escort him into the hotel through a sea of fans and American actress Tallulah Bankhead famously sipped Champagne from her slipper during a 1950s press conference. Conceived by renowned hotelier César Ritz, the hotel was opened on May 24th 1906, and Ritz’s innovations for the hotel included bathrooms for every bedroom, walk-in wardrobes, and brass beds instead of wooden. The Ritz was an immediate success, and The Palm Court was just as popular as ‘the place for tea’ as it is today. In January 2002, The Ritz London became the first hotel to receive a Royal Warrant awarded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for Banqueting and Catering Services.
